MySpace Themes

What are Myspace themes, and how are they different from skins? Well, generally, Myspace themes do have some - surprise! - theme to them. Some Myspace themes include animals, cars, nature, flowers, music (such as musical notes and clefs) and sports, and these are the themes you'll find at myspacemix.

The main difference between Myspace themes and skins is that when you look at Myspace themes, you're choosing a layout for your page that has a unifying idea to it, while skins may just be a background or a neutral design. So while the rules that apply to skins apply to Myspace themes as well, there are also some other tips to be aware of.

The first tip is that when you choose a Myspace theme, you're going to have to keep it in mind when choosing your font and adding other graphics. Whereas with skins all you have to really worry about is color, themes mean that you need to keep the general idea in focus, too.

Let me give you an example. Suppose you're really into sports, and you choose a great sports theme. Now you want to choose a font and add some graphics. It's going to look pretty funny if you've got this rugged sports theme along with a swirly calligraphic font and lots of cute pictures of Daisy Duck and Minnie Mouse. They just don't go together, unless maybe Daisy and Minnie are wearing baseball uniforms. And this works in the opposite direction as well. If you've chosen a flowery nature theme, don't choose a really bold font and aggressive looking graphics. The idea behind a theme is to have some kind of topic that unifies the look on your page. So keep your topic in mind while you choose additional graphics and tricks.

Another tip is to choose your theme before you choose other colors and graphics that you want on your page. Imagine that you've chosen colors and painstakingly gone through all the graphics on the site to choose the ones you like the best. Now you choose a theme...only to find that your theme's colors totally clash with the other colors and graphics you just chose. Bummer, huh? Well, if you choose your theme first, it'll never happen.

One interesting thing you can do when you have a theme to your page is match background music to it. Instead of playing a random song, you can boost your theme by choosing one that complements it. For example, if you've chosen an animal theme, you might want to play jungle music or an identifiable song from an animal movie like "The Lion King." If you pasted a sports theme on your page, you might consider playing the Olympics theme in the background. Just make sure that whichever song you choose, it doesn't significantly increase the download time on your page. We all know that if a page doesn't download quickly, most people will just move on.

But most of all, let your imagination go - and have a great time setting up your page!
